One of the fun things about travelling to foreign countries is that you need to make sure that you get a visa before your departure.
Living in the capial definitely has its perks one of which includes being in close proximity to a variety of embassies and consulates. So for those who like to travel and reside in Ottawa, a simple drive will keep you away from the hassle of mailing applications and sending money via Canada post.
Everyone seems to have different experiences with the Visa process. The Chinese Visa Application process seems to have changed quite a bit since the last time I went (back in 2008).
So what I've done is outlined some suggestions if you find yourself planning a visit to China:
1) If you are simply planning to go to China on a Single Entry/Multiple entry visa, you will need the form "A" filled out. There are different classifications of visas, including Working, Business, and Tourism. Make sure that you understand each class requires specific information.
2) You will require a passport sized photo. Don't worry too much about the size. If you get a Canadian Passport sized photo, it will be fine. Just go to your local Shopper's Drug Mart, Walmart, or Superstore for quick and easy service.
3) Also, if you are applying for a Tourist Visa, the embassy requires either an invitation from someone in China or proof of your hotel booking in China. This was not required back in 2008. So it's safe to say that this requirement will stay in place for the foreseeable future.
4) The cost for a Single Entry Visa is $50. I brought mine in on Tuesday and will be ready for Friday. It will take roughly 4 days which includes the day you submit your application. If you want rush service, you will have to pay an additional $50.
5) Your Visa will be valid from the day you pick it up. So let's say you applied for a 3-month single entry visa two months before departing. You will only be able to stay in China for one month.
There's a wealth of beautiful and not so beautiful destinations in China, so keep an open mind and safe travels!
