One of the most important things for any traveler or expat is to have the ability to communicate with friends and/or family back home. Since not everyone uses Facebook, Twitter, etc., having the capability to send SMS texts directly to your friends phone from any country at no cost is quite economical and useful.
I currently use the Google LG Nexus 5 phone primarily because it:
1) Is unlocked - which allows me to virtually use the phone almost anywhere in the world with a valid SIM card. This is quite beneficial as locked phones have very limited use outside the carrier's country (unless you want to pay exorbitant fees)
2) Provides a very open environment for customization (vs Apple).
Back to TextPlus Free.
This application allows me to create a local phone number anywhere in North America (Canada or USA). Using this number, I am able to send texts to my friends anywhere in Canada or the US for free as long as I have a WiFi connection. This is very useful as I will be living in Japan soon and do not want to incur the costs of having to send international texts to my friends and family back home.
They also have a calling feature that allows you to call virtually anywhere at a very affordable cost. My only issue with this is that the quality is likely dependent on your connection which at anytime can be poor and unreliable. For this reason, you will likely see many negative reviews on this feature of the app. But for my situation, I am only interested in the text feature.
So if you're not a Facebook addict or simply don't want to pay for long distance texting, TextPlus Free provides you with a practical option for keeping in touch with others when outside of your home town/city.
