Food Inc.
It's quite amazing to see how much our society has changed in the last 50 years. We are so caught up in every day life that we've lost reality with things that we take for granted - for example, the food we eat.
Once upon a time, a family farmer could provide for a local community. But as the population and demand grew, so did the need for supply.
Our capitalist driven society has allowed companies with deep pockets to pretty much monopolize the whole food process at the mercy of small time farmers.
In order to maintain a strong hold on the market, these organizations formulate some very unnatural yet profitable ways of raising food quickly and "efficiently". (Why wait 3 months when you can have a full grown chicken in half that time?) The viewer even gets to witness a farmer stuffing corn feed directly into a cow's stomach. Yes, they literally cut out a hole of a living cow and insert the food by hand. What a new twist to force feeding. Talk about optimization!
In addition to the development of ingenius processes by Food Inc. companies' comes the breeding of new super resistant bacteria due to the animals (chicken, beef, and pork) heavy injection of antibiotics and hormones. When these new bacteria get into the water supply or are simply not killed off in the cooking process, people generally get sick or die upon ingestion (as we see with the unfortunate mother who loses her son to bad hamburger meat). Imagine what the antibiotics prescribed to humans are doing to the population.
What is more freightening is the chemical company Monsanto, who's clear goal is to take over the world by patenting every seed in existence and enforcing the law on to anyone who opposes them. Since the company's mission is world domination, they had the help of some worthy "connections" (Bush & Clinton administration) to reach their goals.
It's a vicious circle plainly put. First, Food Inc. monopolizes the food supply by patenting their processes, pushing nature to the limits, and defying all sense of morality. These foods are so GMO (Genetically Modified) that they contain very little nutrition and become more of a harm to the human body. Eventually the human DNA alters and people begin to experience new sicknesses and diseases. These same people go to their doctor for advice and start consuming drugs like candy from the candy store. Then, all the sudden they realize that nothing works and end up going into debt for trying to stay alive. With no money and health, they are left with the only option to borrow from the banks and try to get a credit card and/or a loans (if they even qualify for one). For the love of Capitalism!
There is hope though.
The Capitalist machine is dependent on its consumers. Theoretically, since the market delegates what products they like, it will be in the best interest of companies to meet that need. Albeit, highly processed and manufactured foods are subsidized to make the cost cheaper, but is it really worth giving up your health for? So consider your health as a major benefit. The cost of buying nutritious food is a fraction of what you spend on pharmaceutical drugs (Tylenol, Pepto Bismol, antibiotics, etc.) if you continue to eat poorly.
Some tips:
- Support your local farmers
- Eat organic food
- Consume less meat
- Get a healthy cook book

On a side note, I have a busy week ahead of me. I need to generate a lot of money in order to meet my revenue targets. So the one thing that continues to motivate me is the idea that if I don't make the money, I can't continue to eat the way I want. Life is a fine balance.
Ciao for now.
